Hi, I’m Kristen.
I’m obsessed with ragtime piano, Disneyland (and all things Disney), and my dogs.
I was born and raised in Las Vegas. I started piano lessons at age 9, and joined the school band in middle school, where I dabbled on clarinet, flute, and even bassoon. I went to high school at the Las Vegas Academy of Performing and Visual Arts, where I majored in piano and band (on flute).
At age 14, I visited Disneyland with my family, and fell in love with the ragtime piano there. The pianist at the time was a man named Johnny Hodges, who played there for about 25 years in total and is now a great friend and amazing mentor to me. He was the first to inspire me to learn and explore the ragtime genre.
I went on to receive a music performance degree from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas. I majored in flute, but piano has always been my real love. Along the way I had the opportunity to be a part of several pit orchestras and other amazing productions, including Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Once On This Island, and even Madame Butterfly.
Growing up, my dad always told me that when I was older and bought myself a home, he would let me take my upright piano with me. So, at age 23, I did just that. Ever since, I’ve been playing all the time in said home, mostly working on ragtime pieces and arrangements, but some other small stuff on the side. This is in between my visits to Disneyland of course.
